Timeless Travertine Pool Decks Designed for Florida Living
Natural stone for pool decks, patios and walkways around Clearwater, laid in classic patterns that feel at home with Florida architecture.
Travertine is a natural limestone cut into pavers and used in Florida for pool decks, patios and walkways, valued for its textured, non-slip surface and for staying comparatively cool underfoot.
Natural stone, laid with care
Travertine forms where mineral springs deposit limestone over thousands of years, which is why every piece has its own veining, color shifts and small natural pores. Those variations are the reason people choose it: a travertine deck looks like stone because it is stone, and it gets that relaxed, sun-washed look that suits Florida homes.
Most outdoor travertine in our area is tumbled, which softens the edges and leaves a textured surface with good grip when wet. It’s commonly laid in a French (Versailles) pattern that mixes four sizes, or in simpler linear and square layouts for a more modern look. Like other pavers, it needs a properly compacted base, consistent joints and a solid edge to stay flat.
Travertine works beautifully next to green. Some of our favorite projects pair a travertine patio or walkway with an artificial turf lawn. If you are weighing travertine against concrete pool deck pavers, we’ll walk you through the differences in look, feel and budget.
Why homeowners choose travertine
A look that doesn’t date
Natural variation and soft, tumbled edges give a classic finish that fits Florida homes.
Comfortable underfoot
Travertine is known for staying cooler than many manufactured surfaces, which matters on a pool deck.
Good grip
Tumbled and textured finishes provide traction when the deck is wet.
Pairs with everything
Light stone looks good next to turf, plantings, pool water and both modern and traditional houses.
Where we install travertine
- Pool decks and coping
- Travertine decks with matching bullnose coping at the water’s edge.
- Patios
- Outdoor living areas off the house or lanai, often curving to follow the lawn.
- Walkways and borders
- Paths through the yard and borders that frame turf or planting beds.
- Travertine with turf
- Stone patios and walkways surrounded by a low-maintenance turf lawn.
Travertine choices
Travertine comes in many finishes and formats. These are the main decisions.
| Decision | What we look at with you |
|---|---|
| Finish | Tumbled for texture and softened edges, or brushed and honed for a smoother look; polished finishes are not for outdoor use. |
| Pattern | French (Versailles) pattern for a classic look, or linear and square layouts for a cleaner, modern feel. |
| Color | Ivory and cream blends are the most common; walnut, gold and silver tones are also available. |
| Thickness and method | Thicker pavers set on a compacted base, or thinner pieces bonded over a sound concrete slab. |
| Coping | Bullnose coping in matching or contrasting travertine at pool edges and steps. |
| Sealing | Sealing can help resist stains and makes cleaning easier; we’ll recommend whether and when. |
How we install travertine
Choose stone and pattern
We look at samples together and plan the pattern and borders for your space.
Prepare the ground
Excavation and a compacted base, or preparation of an existing slab for bonded installation.
Set the stone
Pieces are laid in pattern with consistent joints, blending color variation across the area.
Cut and finish edges
Curves, coping and borders are cut cleanly so the edges look deliberate.
Joints and cleanup
Joints are filled, the surface cleaned, and sealing scheduled if you choose it.

Travertine Decks: common questions
Still deciding? Text a photo of your yard and ask Edilson directly.
Is travertine slippery when wet?
Tumbled and textured travertine has good grip when wet, which is why it is so common on pool decks. Polished travertine is slippery and is meant for indoor use. We only install finishes suitable for outdoor, wet areas.
Does travertine stay cool around the pool?
Travertine is known for staying comparatively comfortable underfoot, especially in lighter colors. Any surface in direct midday sun will be warm, but travertine is usually noticeably more comfortable than darker manufactured materials.
Are the small holes in travertine a defect?
No. Small pores and pits are a natural part of the stone. Some travertine comes filled at the factory, and tumbled pavers keep a more natural, open surface. We’ll show you samples so you know what to expect.
Does travertine need to be sealed?
It doesn’t have to be, but sealing can help resist staining and makes cleaning easier, particularly around pools and outdoor kitchens. We’ll recommend a sealer and timing based on your stone and how the area is used.
Is travertine more expensive than concrete pavers?
Natural stone generally costs more than concrete pavers, and price varies with finish, thickness and pattern. Because every project is different, we give you an estimate for your specific area and the stone you choose rather than a general per-square-foot number.
Can travertine go over my existing pool deck?
Thinner travertine can be bonded over a sound, stable concrete deck when heights at the coping, doors and drains allow it. Cracked or moving slabs should be removed first. We inspect the deck before recommending an approach.
